Laptops for Exams

Remember: you can use your own device for your exams. This process is for students who do not have access to their own laptop, or who have a specific accommodation need.

If you have been approved to use a computer during exams, you will be able to use your own personal laptop or tablet computer. If you do not have access to a personal computer, and will be borrowing one from our office, here is what you need to know:

Requesting a Laptop

If you or your course staff need to borrow a SDS Loaner Laptop for your exam, please complete the Laptop Request Form at least five business days in advance (remember: weekends are not business days). We will reply with details about pickup location and time.

Picking Up/Returning a Laptop

We will let you know when and where you can pick up your laptop and drop it off after your exam.

Please ensure the laptop is powered off before it is returned.

Laptop Software/Hardware Configuration

Laptops have standards Windows software installed, along with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, etc.). Specific software or hardware may be requested when reserving a laptop.

Use of Laptop

Each laptop comes with an external power supply that can be used in case battery power is not sufficient for the length of your exam. Any other requested hardware will be included as well. The laptops will have all requested and approved software pre-installed.

Your course staff will let you know how to send them your exam files. You will need to do so before you return the laptop to SDS. Files left on the laptop are subject to deletion.

SDS laptops cannot be used for personal study reasons. They are for exams only.

Unreturned or Damaged Laptops

If the borrowed equipment is not returned by the due date, or if it is returned in damaged condition, you may be liable for its cost, which could result in a hold placed on your record by the University Registrar preventing you from enrolling in courses, registering with the University, or obtaining transcripts until the matter is resolved. The matter may also be referred to the Judicial Administrator.
